Ceramic Shallow Bowl Sgraffito a mythical creature Johgus Bornholm Mid-Century 1960s

Details

This exceptional mid-century Scandinavian studio ceramic bowl showcases a striking, stylized sgraffito design of a mythical creature incised into its center. With its low, shallow profile and thick, robust rim, the piece embraces a refined Brutalist aesthetic. The textured, carved central artwork beautifully contrasts with the dark, satin-matte glaze surface, creating an elegant collector's piece that perfectly highlights the celebrated Danish ceramic movement of the Mid-Century 1960s. Crafted from heavy, dense stoneware characteristic of the Baltic island of Bornholm, the bowl features a rich, deep charcoal-black to dark chocolate glaze. The unglazed bottom reveals the signature three-fish coat of arms stamp for the renowned Johgus Bornholm pottery studio. This versatile shallow bowl makes a captivating statement when displayed flat on a minimalist dining table, a living room console, or styled upright on a wooden plate stand inside a mid-century modern credenza. Its dark tones and organic, coastal motif ground bohemian, rustic modern, or industrial interior spaces with distinct vintage character. 7.5"W × 7.5"D × 1.6"H Vintage condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with use.
