Mid-Century Modern "Cloud" Sofa After Vladimir Kagan, 1980s

Details

Inspired by the groundbreaking organic forms that made Vladimir Kagan one of the most influential furniture designers of the twentieth century, this mid-century sculptural sofa captures the effortless fluidity and elegance that define his celebrated aesthetic. Free from rigid lines and sharp angles, its sweeping biomorphic silhouette appears almost carved by nature, creating a sense of movement from every perspective. Generously proportioned and beautifully balanced, the sofa is distinguished by its continuous flowing seat and softly curved backrest, a composition that feels both bold and inviting. Resting on seven tapered solid wood legs, the design achieves a remarkable visual lightness while providing exceptional structural support. Every curve transitions seamlessly into the next, highlighting the thoughtful craftsmanship and refined upholstery work required to execute such a complex form. The sofa has been professionally reupholstered in a richly textured fabric whose warm golden tone enhances the sculptural quality of the design while complementing its graceful proportions. Rather than competing with the silhouette, the upholstery emphasizes its flowing contours and timeless character. Pieces inspired by Vladimir Kagan remain highly sought after for their ability to blur the boundary between furniture and sculpture. Their organic forms feel as contemporary today as when they first emerged, making this "Cloud" sofa a striking example of enduring American modern design and a piece that continues to captivate collectors and design enthusiasts alike.
