Mid-Century Walnut and Glass Biomorphic Coffee Table by Harvey Probber

Details

Designed by Harvey Probber and manufactured in the United States during the 1960s, this biomorphic coffee table is a striking example of the sculptural approach that helped define American modern furniture. Rather than relying on ornament, Probber created visual interest through fluid forms, balanced proportions, and the thoughtful combination of natural materials with clean modern lines. The table features a freeform, thick-cut glass top that appears to float effortlessly above a solid walnut base. Its organic silhouette echoes the biomorphic movement popularized in mid-century design, while the substantial walnut pedestal introduces warmth and visual weight beneath the transparent glass. Every angle reveals a different profile, making the table equally compelling from above as it is from the side. Harvey Probber was among the first American designers to successfully blend modern design with luxury craftsmanship. His work was favored by leading architects and interior designers for its refined construction, innovative forms, and timeless appeal. Today, his furniture remains highly sought after for its ability to feel both sculptural and functional. Professionally refinished, this exceptional coffee table showcases the enduring quality of American craftsmanship and the distinctive design language that made Harvey Probber one of the most influential figures in mid-century furniture. Whether viewed as a functional centerpiece or as a work of sculptural art, it is a statement piece that continues to captivate more than half a century after its creation.
