Western Rider, 1941 by Douglass Parshall, Mixed Media on Paper P3464

Details

Expressive 1941 work by Douglas Parshall, depicting a mounted rider accompanied by a steer beneath sweeping, abstracted tree forms. Executed in mixed media, the composition blends fluid line, washes of earthy color, and gestural movement to create a dynamic Western scene. Parshall’s loose, modern handling emphasizes motion and atmosphere over detail, characteristic of early-1940s American regional modernism. Presented with a wide mat and period frame, this piece is a strong example of Parshall’s ability to merge narrative subject matter with expressive, painterly abstraction. Measures 12.5" x 16.5", in frame 22.5" x 26.5"
