Wire Work Server Twist Handle Most Unusual Sterling Silver J E Caldwell 1890

Details

American sterling silver wire work large server by J. E. Caldwell of Philadelphia, c.1890. This most unusual server has a central twist handle which fans out to form the frame of the blade on one end and flows to each side at the top to form the sides of the handle. To the top of the handle is attached a blank shield shaped cartouche. We have never seen anything like this and can′t find any record of anything similar. It bears the production number S5250, the mark of J. E. Caldwell and Sterling. The soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear, crisp detail, with no monograms, removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
