Mid-Century Modern Walnut Lounge Chairs with Floating Armrests, 1950s

Details

Designed and manufactured in the United States during the 1950s, these mid-century modern walnut lounge chairs embody the sculptural approach that made American furniture of the era so enduring. Every angle reveals a thoughtful balance of flowing upholstery and walnut lines, creating a silhouette that is both visually striking and exceptionally inviting. The design’s key value lies in its distinctive floating walnut armrests, which appear to hover effortlessly between the seat and backrest. Their angular profile beautifully contrasts with the generously curved seat, while the deep button-tufted back adds texture, depth, and a subtle nod to classic tailoring. The thick, sculpted seat cushion is shaped for comfort, and the exposed solid walnut frame, tapered legs, and warm wood grain provide a refined architectural presence without overwhelming the design. Professionally refinished and newly reupholstered in a premium textured fabric, these chairs have been carefully restored while preserving the integrity of their original craftsmanship, breathing new life into a timeless mid-century design. The fresh upholstery complements the walnut frame, emphasizing the elegant interplay between warm wood tones and soft, inviting upholstery. Pieces like these continue to be admired for their confident silhouette and exceptional craftsmanship. From the floating armrests to the sculpted seat and beautifully tufted backrest, every detail reflects the enduring appeal of mid-century American design, furniture created to be as visually compelling today as it was more than half a century ago.
