A rare example of 1950s American mid-century modern design, this walnut sofa was designed by John Lubberts and Lambert Mulder for Erwin-Lambeth and Tomlinson as part of the Sophisticate Collection. Its exceptionally long profile is distinguished by a gracefully curved walnut crest rail that sweeps continuously across the back, giving the sofa a sculptural presence while emphasizing its impressive scale. The upholstered body rests on a solid walnut base supported by tapered legs, with the rear legs gently curving outward in an elegant finishing detail. Four tailored seat cushions create a clean horizontal design, while the button-tufted backrest introduces subtle depth without interrupting the sofa’s streamlined character. The exposed walnut crest rail and lower frame provide a warm contrast against the newly applied textured upholstery. The walnut has also been professionally refinished, highlighting its rich grain and beautifully shaped woodwork. John Lubberts and Lambert Mulder created distinctive modern furniture for several important American manufacturers, and their work for Erwin-Lambeth and Tomlinson is particularly admired for combining sculptural forms with fine furniture craftsmanship.
