Details

Mid-century modern walnut sofa designed by Jens Risom for Risom Designs, United States, circa 1950s. Model U-150 is a masterclass in design, where every line and proportion serves a purpose. The sofa is anchored by a beautifully crafted solid walnut base that extends beyond simple support, creating a striking visual frame that highlights the floating form of the upholstered body. Viewed from the rear, the exposed walnut stretcher and angular supports reveal the same level of craftsmanship as the front, allowing the piece to be appreciated from every angle. This example has been expertly restored, breathing new life into a design classic. Reupholstered in a textured light chenille fabric that complements the warmth of the walnut. Rich leather piping outlines the silhouette with definition, while hand-tufted leather buttons along the backrest introduce a subtle contrast that enhances its tailored appearance without overwhelming the design. The generously cushioned seat and gently curved arms offer exceptional comfort while maintaining the refined aesthetic for which Risom became known. As one of the earliest designers to introduce Scandinavian modern principles to the American market, Jens Risom believed that great furniture should be both beautiful and genuinely livable. Rather than relying on decorative excess, his designs celebrate thoughtful craftsmanship, carefully selected materials, and enduring design. The U-150 embodies those ideals, combining sculptural walnut construction with refined upholstery in a way that has kept it highly regarded by anyone who appreciates quality furniture.
