Monumental Italian Chrome and Lucite Coffee Table by Sandro Petti

Details

This mid-century modern coffee table, designed by Sandro Petti for L'Angolo MetallArte in Italy during the 1970s, is a remarkable example of sculptural modernist design. Defined by its dramatic use of lucite and polished metals, the table achieves a captivating visual effect where the structure appears almost weightless, allowing the smoked-glass top and objects placed upon it to seem as though they are floating in space. At the heart of the design is a polished chrome square base from which four angular lucite supports extend outward. These transparent legs create a sense of architectural precision while maintaining remarkable visual lightness. The frame surrounding the glass top is finished in chrome, with each corner accented by polished brass plates that add warmth and contrast to the otherwise cool palette of materials. The generously scaled smoked-glass surface provides ample room for books, decorative objects, or sculptural accents, making the piece both functional and visually commanding. From every angle, the interplay of materials creates reflections and transparency that shift with the light, reinforcing the table’s dynamic presence. Bold yet refined, this Italian coffee table perfectly embodies the innovative spirit of 1970s design. It is a statement piece that anchors a room with architectural elegance while maintaining an airy, modern aesthetic; ideal for interiors that celebrate both craftsmanship and sculptural form.
